Mónica Oliveira Costa graduated from the Catholic University of Lisbon, Portugal, with subsequent postgraduate studies in consumer law and in IT law. She is a partner of the law firm Coelho Ribeiro & Associados and member of the Portuguese Bar Association as well as a Certified Information Privacy Professional/Europe (CIPP/E). Her main areas of practice are data protection, IT, consumer law, marketing and advertising law. she has authored articles on data protection and wrote the Portugal chapter for the European Lawyer Reference Series Data Protection & Privacy First Edition 2012 (Thomson Reuters). She is the IAPP Portugal KnowledgeNet chair for Lisbon within the IAPP (since 2012); speaker at several seminars on legal issues from her practice in Portugal and was a speaker at the Annual European Data Protection Intensive (2008–2011) as a representative and privacy expert of Portugal; moderator on the Data Protection & Privacy panel of the ItechLaw European Conference (Oslo, 2011) and speaker on the Data Protection panel ‘EU General Data Protection Regulation’ of the ItechLaw European Conference (Roma, 2012). She has authored articles on data protection (‘Workers’ Health Portugal’ (2008) and ‘Whistleblowing Portugal’ (2009), both for DataGuidance, Cecile Park Publishing, Ltd as well as ‘New guidelines on workplace drug and alcohol testing’ (2011) on data protection law and policy and is a regular contributor to Privacy Europe’s blog. Her recent work includes advising national and multinational companies on regulatory and compliance with respect to local and global data protection programs as well as on e-commerce, advertisement and marketing. Mónica was recognised as an Information Technology leading private practice lawyer in Portugal by Who's Who Legal Information Technology 2013.
