Evert van Eeden attended the University of Pretoria where he was awarded the BA LLB degree. He was admitted as an attorney in 1978. He joined the Department of Mercantile Law at the University of South Africa in 1975, where he served as a lecturer and associate professor. He occupied various positions in the public service, spanning consumer protection law, competition law and the governance of state-owned corporations, resuming full-time practice as an attorney in 1997. Evert has specialised in competition law, consumer protection and class action law, the law of contract, product liability and product recall, in which areas he advises both local and international clients.  

He has written on a wide range of legal subjects and has contributed to a variety of international legal publications, including on restructuring and insolvency, and financial regulation. He is the author of A Guide to the Consumer Protection Act (2009), Consumer Protection Law in South Africa (2013), co-authoring its second edition (2017). He is the author of the title ‘Consumer Protection’ in the Law of South Africa (LexisNexis). He holds various postgraduate qualifications, including an MBL from the University of South Africa and an LLM degree in corporate law from the University of Pretoria. Evert is based in Pretoria, where he is a director of the firm of Van Eeden Rabie Inc.
