Marcelo has been working for Mattos Filho for more than 10 years and is the most senior lawyer in the environmental practice. He has been directly involved in all kinds of environmental issues throughout the years, especially in contamination, solid waste, licensing and forest cases, dedicating a good part of his work to complex negotiation and prelitigation matters.

His knowledge of socioenvironmental law and legal writing technique allowed him to assist a client in a major negotiation involving environmental and cultural damages – including spiritual damages, which is a worldwide leading case in this regard – arising from the 2006 mid-air crash between two airplanes in which one of them crashed into the Amazon jungle, within the limits of an indigenous territory. Marcelo drafted the agreement aiming at compensating the damages to the Kayapó indigenous people.

In view of his prominent position in the Practice and outstanding relationship with clients, Mattos Filho has endorsed Marcelo to international secondments at other firms in both Germany and The Netherlands. He spent 2019 in Mattos Filho’s London office, not only devoting his time to international cases involving environmental law, but also coordinating global M&A transactions and helping the firm developing international partners and clients.

He holds an LLB degree from the Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie, a specialisation degree in environmental law and Strategic Management of Sustainability from Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo, a Certificate in American law from University of California, Berkeley and an LLM in Legal Theory at Goethe University Frankfurt. He is also a master’s candidate in global law at Université Libre de Bruxelles.
