Birgitta Van Itterbeek is a partner with GDS advocaten in its Antwerp office. Birgitta was a partner for more than 16 years in large independent law firms in Belgium prior to joining her current niche firm and has been a member of the Bar since 1991. She is a leading expert in aircraft finance, acting for the major airlines in Belgium, but also for lessors, financial institutions and private jet owners. She focuses her practice on all matters relating to a fleet of aircraft, including engines, parts and maintenance thereof, but also European Union Aviation Safety Agency rules and regulations and pilot licences. She assists her clients not only in transactions, but also on litigation and legal advice. Having more than 30 years of experience in financial law, she has developed a strong practice in financial litigation, especially in complex international banking matters. She has a niche knowledge on legal aspects of fund management, regulatory aspects of insurance and reinsurance and complex insurance issues.
Birgitta regularly publishes papers on selected topics in the field of banking and finance, aviation law and leasing and is frequently invited to speak at seminars. She was selected by Who’s Who of Aviation Lawyers and Business Lawyers as a ‘World-leading Aviation Lawyer’. She is further recognised as a leading individual by The Legal 500, The Expert Guide, Women in Business Law and IFLR. She has been a member of Women on Board since 2011 and a member of the board as independent director of Inpulse Investment Manager CVBA, a licensed AIFM fund manager, since 2017.
Birgitta graduated in law from the University of Leuven cum laude in 1988. She gained a master’s degree (LLM) from the University of Virginia, School of Law as a Fulbright alumni in 1989. She drafts, litigates, publishes and lectures in Dutch, French and English and has a good working knowledge of Italian.
