Ganesh Rao is a partner in the firm’s asset management practice. Having joined the firm in 2007 after graduating from the National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata, he has exclusively focused on the asset management and investment funds practice at the firm. He has been involved with the establishment of innovative and complex cross-border fund structures, including joint ventures. He has also been involved actively with regulators in the formulation of and revisions to asset management laws in India.
He focuses on establishment of investment funds focused on investing in the Indian sub-continent, in a broad range of activities and sectors, including infrastructure, venture capital, social venture, hedge, real estate, debt and private equity. He has also extensively advised on the establishment of fund of funds, carried interest arrangements, co-investment structures, fund restructuring, investor disputes and managed accounts. Additionally, he regularly advises funds established outside India on regulatory matters relating to their Indian investments.
A select list of his notable recent funds where the firm acted as fund counsel or co-fund counsel include the Macquarie SBI Infrastructure Funds, JP Morgan-sponsored India Property Funds, Kaizen Private Equity (India’s first education-focused fund), Dolma Impact Fund (the first fund for exclusive investment in Nepal) and Pragati India Fund (the first fund for impact investment in India’s poor states).
