Geoffrey Clews is a senior barrister who has specialised in contentious tax and trusts matters for more than 30 years. Geoff’s practice covers all aspects of tax controversy. He advises clients in the course of tax investigations. He conducts the formal aspects of New Zealand’s complex statutory tax disputes process. Before the courts at both trial and appellate levels, he litigates civil tax challenges and related issues, and defends criminal tax charges. For more than a decade, he has been consistently rated in Chambers Asia Pacific as an outstanding practitioner in disputed tax matters and is also highly rated by the International Tax Review, Best Lawyers and Finance Monthly.
Geoff is a member and past convener of the New Zealand Law Society’s Tax Committee. He is a long-standing member of the International Fiscal Association and of the International Bar Association, for which he has acted as national tax reporter. He has also acted as national reporter to the Foreign Lawyer’s Forum of the American Bar Association’s Section of Taxation. Geoff is a Teaching Fellow in the University of Auckland Law School Masters’ programme in taxation studies
