Gerrit Tönningsen, Dr iur, is an associate at Hengeler Mueller’s Frankfurt office and part of the banking and finance group. He joined the firm in 2020 and advises and represents banks, investment firms, asset managers, insurance companies and payment service providers. His practice focuses on financial regulation, capital markets and corporate law with a particular focus on payment services and fintech business models.
Gerrit studied at the Universities of Passau and Frankfurt and at King’s College London. He received a PhD from the Goethe University Frankfurt for a thesis on cross-border banking supervision in the European Union. He has worked as a research and teaching assistant at Goethe University Frankfurt and as a trainee at the European Central Bank. Gerrit regularly publishes on financial regulatory matters.
