João Lima Cluny joined Morais Leitão in 2007. He is a member of the firm’s criminal and compliance team. His practice focuses on the assistance of clients in the context of criminal and regulatory offences and particularly in the economic and financial domains. João has been involved in high-profile litigation cases in Portugal and has extensive trial experience, especially regarding corporate liability.
In recent years, João has been intensely working on matters related to compliance (regarding the prevention of corruption and money laundering), internal investigations and regulatory enforcement in different sectors such as sports, energy, competition, environment, banking, capital markets, labour, tax and media.
He is also a member of the arbitration, sport and entertainment, and infrastructure teams.
He is a member of the first instance club licensing body for UEFA competition of the Portuguese Football Federation and a member of the certification jury for the recognition, validation and certification process of professional competences of football coaches, nominated by the Portuguese Football Federation.
João is an arbitrator and mediator of the Portuguese Court of Arbitration for Sports.
On the academic circuit, he holds a master’s degree in forensic sciences at the Nova Law School, where, since 2014, he has taught as guest professor (interdisciplinary legal practice). He regularly participates in seminars and conferences predominantly on criminal law and criminal procedure, arbitration and sports law. He is an author and co-author of articles on the same matters.
