Shiping Liao is a law professor at Beijing Normal University, focusing on several aspects of international dispute settlement, international trade law, international investment law, the law of treaties, the law of the sea, international criminal law, international humanitarian law and extraterritorial jurisdiction, with more than 50 international publications under his belt. He is now a member of the advisory board on international law of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Justice. He now serves as an executive adviser of the Chinese Initiative on International Law (CIIL), an international NGO with special consultation status under the United Nations Economic and Social Council, and a senior adviser at Jincheng Tongda & Neal LLP (JT&N), Beijing. He used to participate in bilateral and international negotiations with regard to trade, investment and maritime affairs; has been present before World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute settlement proceedings on behalf of the government; and has acted as an expert witnesses in several international commercial arbitrations at the International Commerce Chamber, Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce and Singapore International Arbitration Centre.
