Willy Mikalef is a counsel based in Bird & Bird’s Paris office, specialising in space and communications, with a commitment to providing business-oriented, sustainable advice.
After training at a satellite operator, an e-commerce world leader, the European Space Agency and law firms in Paris and London, and gaining significant experience in commercial, communications, space and satellite law, he joined Bird & Bird in 2013.
Willy advises public institutions and space operators on space law issues, such as licensing, space objects registration, debris mitigation requirements, liability and space contracts. He also has experience in advising businesses and regulators in all areas of communications and satellite law. This includes network deployment, licensing, radio spectrum, numbering, interconnection, cybersecurity, public safety, law enforcement, privacy, consumer protection, terminal telecommunications equipment product conformity and regulatory taxes. He regularly acts as a lead lawyer on international projects and transactions.
Willy often presents on communications and space law topics before industry and academic bodies. He is the co-author of a book on legal practices in the aerospace industry. He is also a member of the French Institute of Space and Telecommunications Law and the European Centre for Space Law. He has been recognised as a leading space law practitioner in France by Who’s Who Legal.
